But step through the door and you'll be transported into a serene Scandinavian-inspired space – appropriate, given guests enjoy a private session in the shared Finnish sauna. The wood-burning stove, replete with a supply of logs, is the perfect tonic after a brisk stroll through the glens of the Pentland Hills Regional Park, and the kitchen provides everything you need for dinner. You'll need a car here, as it's a mile from the nearest road and a short drive from Penicuik – but the parking spot makes this a breeze. Just note there are a few other cottages on-site, so you may bump into other guests from time to time. *The sauna can be used for free once a week for a private two-hour session.
