With a combination of old-fashioned furniture and modern flourishes, Silk Road manages to retain an understanding of Rome’s history without getting bogged down in recreating the past. It’s not a simple balancing act, and for the most part, Silk Road pulls it off. Unpretentious and reassuring, Shoreline is comfortable, and the kind of place where things work without any fuss. It’s on the lower ground floor, so views are out of the question, but while it’s not overly bright, it’s not really any different to any number of the old flats in narrow streets closer to the centre of the city.
