The charming town of Aberfeldy is a five-minute drive away, or an hour-long walk along the river path – perfect for hounds. The lofty, open lounge caught our eye inside with a modern woodburning stove in the centre for chilly evenings. If you’re fond of the finer things in life, this traditionally-styled apartment with views over Loch Ness is a winner. Set in a Grade A-listed, gorgeously Gothic former monastery, there are high ceilings, big windows and oak panels to marvel at. Period pieces mix with modern luxuries — the underfloor heating in the bathrooms is very welcome during the Scottish winter — to create a refined but relaxed home. We have our eye on the cosy tartan armchair, with possibly the best view in the house. We’re sure you’ll find yourself sitting there, watching the light change over the loch. You’ll be staying on a luxury estate with some fabulous facilities — a swimming pool, sauna, gym, tennis court, archery, croquet and, of course, a giant chessboard. Apart from the odd bleat of a sheep or moo of a coo, there’s not much else to disturb the peace at this spot in the Perthshire countryside. Fields stretch before you (check out the view from the balcony), yet it’s just three miles to the charming market town of Dunkeld to stock up on supplies and try the local cafes. It’s also a walker and mountain biker’s paradise around these parts – this home has heated bike storage and a boot room. The wood-burner in the living room can warm up frozen toes and the sleek kitchen is equipped with everything you need to fuel up, post-walk.
