Sifakis Villa

Piruniana is a small beautiful traditional village in the center of the prefecture of Heraklion.
The distance from Heraklion is about 20 minutes, as it is the same time to go to the beaches of South Crete, Matala, Phaistos, etc.
The Villa is fully equipped for a winter or summer stay.
It has two bedrooms, one with a double bed and the other bedroom with two single beds. Large, comfortable, fully equipped kitchen, and a single living room with a fireplace for the winter, and a dining room. Outside there is a yard with a barbecue and a wood-burning oven that you can use.
Also very close to the village there are supermarkets, taverns, Pharmacies, doctors, and local transport for Heraklion or South Crete.

Pirouniana Waterfall
A few meters after the beautiful Byzantine church of Saint George Hostos at Pirouniana, by village Agia Varvara we meet an unknown waterfall. The fall of Saint George is on the riverside path that leads to the deserted settlement Axenti today and shortly after a well-preserved watermill. The stream at that point creates a small waterfall 4 meters high. The area of the waterfall is surrounded by planes and other trees. Despite the relatively small height of the waterfall it is really beautiful and forms a small pond with water. The most impressive, however, is the rock color hues at the point where the water falls.
Church of Saint George Chostos at Pirouniana
Next to Axedianos River and close to settlement Pirouniana we meet the Byzantine church of Saint George Hostos. The original building had a dome and later it was extended. The part with the dome bears frescoes in poor condition.
The wider area is beautiful and the green Axedianos River creates a nice waterfall next to the temple till spring. The visitor gets impressed by the old watermill near the temple.
Panagia Kardiotissa
The church of Panagia Kardiotissa is located at the green position Panagia, in Agios Thomas village. It overlooks the river Axedianos and in winter waterfalls are formed at the edge of the churchyard, making it a unique landscape. Next there's an old watermill in very good condition next to the Venetian bridge that still crosses the river. The watermill is one of the 15 mills of Axedianos and has been restored.
The chapel was built in the 13th century in the place of an older temple (7th century), which in turn was possibly built on the site of an ancient temple. It was frescoed in the 14th century, but almost nothing survives from that era. The chapel came into foreground in 1912, when a woman saw an oracle and pointed where the icon of Saint George was buried. Due to the pilgrims arriving there, a guesthouse was built in 1915 and a few nuns stayed here in the period.
During the German occupation, the guesthouse hosted some locals. One of them, called Mastrogiannis, offered later the bell tower of the church.
The deserted guesthouse and the degraded temple were restored inToday the place has been very nicely landscaped with nice benches below the 600 years old oak tree and peacocks.
It is noteworthy to mention the custom of zosimo that takes place at every church of Agios Thomas. Every 2-3 year, the women of the village of Agios Thomas spin ropes and immerse it in beeswax for 7 times. Then they put the rope around the temple in order to keep evil spirit away. This is a custom that has its roots in ancient times and takes place in spring.
