The suburb of Hornsby was named after Samuel Henry Horne (1798-1886) a migrant from Norwich, Norfolk in England who served in this northern district as a constable. In the time of his service the area was prone to attacks from bandits or what was locally known as bushrangers. In 1830, Samuel Horne and John Thorn, a fellow constable came to prominence when they tracked down and killed John Macnamara, the notorious bushranger who terrorised this region. As an appreciation for their services, Mr. Horne was promoted to senior constable of the district and they were given some land which Mr. Horne named as Hornsby Place from which the area's name was derived and Mr. Thorn's land came to be known as Thornleigh. In the early days, the Normanhurst region was one of plantations and orchards. The place that is now Hornsby was then known as Hornsby Junction, a transportation hub from Normanhurst to the northern 250 acres in Old Man's Valley of Mr. Thomas Edward Higgins and to Mr. Solomon Wiseman's ferry across the river to the north. In 1830, George Peat extended the Old Berowra Road to the Hawkesbury River at Peats Ferry now the old Pacific Highway and in 1886 the Hornsby Railway station was opened.
