Traditional Kyoto House on River
Features: • laundry
A traditional Kyoto Machiya in northern Kyoto, right on the famous Kamigamo river on a narrow one-way street lined with cherry trees. This is a very traditional wood, tatami, organic house with a front and back garden, bath, heated toilet, and options for futon or a full western bed. The guest room is on the first floor, with its own air-con/heater and easy access to the bath, toilet, kitchen, laundry, and front entrance. The bed is inside the room (although the photo on this site shows it further back). Our bedroom is on the second floor. Kamigamo Shrine, with its spacious grounds and popular bathing creek, is a three-minute walk away. The neighborhood, which developed around the shrine hundreds of years ago, is historic and preserved, and has many old wooden townhouses and farmhouses. Easy walking or bicycle access to the subway station just south of us, from which one can reach downtown Kyoto in 15 minutes. Across the river there is a modern commercial district with supermarkets, inexpensive restaurants, and coffee shops that are popular with local university students. A bit further takes you to Kitaoji station and the Aeon Mall. We are Americans who have lived in Japan since 2000, and in this house since 2012. We come and go a lot between the U.S., Europe, and Mexico, and enjoy hosting during our time in Kyoto.
