Lesser known than Corfu to the north and Kefalonia to the south, Lefkada is where you want to head for some of the best beaches this side of the Indian Ocean. With secluded coves, golden sands and crystal-clear waters, you've got all the ingredients for a picture-perfect escape. The nearby western coast will dazzle you with its beautiful beaches, such as Porto Katsiki?, fifteen kilometres away.

Closer to home, the village of Vasiliki is something of a watersports and windsurfing mecca with a pebble and shingle beach that makes for stunning clear seas. There are plenty of traditional tavernas and lively bars, particularly around the harbour, where you can practically eat with your toes in the water.
