avatar A gem of a place!
Rating: (5) rate
They say the best things happen by accident and that is what happened when I stumbled upon this delightful home located far from the noise and clutter that we as city-goers become accustomed to. Sharanya is a great place to sit back, catch up on some reading, listen to music, walk around discovering Auroville or just spend quality time with family and friends. We had not been on holiday as a family for very long and so we decided we should go somewhere over the Pongal holidays. Auroville, owing to its proximity to Chennai made for the perfect escape. Shiv Saran, the warm owner of Sharanya, though in Mumbai, made all the necessary arrangements while the friendly caretaker, Ishwar Singh, went out of his way to make us comfortable -whether that meant cycling down to get eggs for breakfast or making us his delicious tea, whenever we asked. The rooms are spacious and tastefully done with nice views of the garden. The house itself is beautiful with gorgeous woodwork, the furniture and artefacts only add to the elegance. Sharanya with its calm and tranquil surrounding, is the ideal place to reconnect with oneself and enjoy the peace and quiet. For those who enjoy a laid-back holiday, Sharanya is the place to go to. We had a memorable visit and will certainly go back!

avatar Perfect place

The Villa is definitely a treasured find. The property is in the middle of a vast and well kept orchard garden property. The house itself is an architectural masterpiece tying in the traditional with modern concepts. I would highly recommend it to a extended family or a group to stay in, while still maintaining some privacy for those quiet moments. It is 10 minutes to the Aurobindo ashram, but relatively far (20 min drive) from the city. Most definitely a rural traditional getaway with modern facilities. The caretaker/gardener has great attention to detail. Dinner/ Lunch/Breakfast can be arranged with sufficient notice. The food is simple but delicious. I would not recommend this place for someone looking for the typical resort distraction. It is a great fit for a quiet contemplative group looking to unwind and rediscover each other's company. ++Great value for money for an extended family (3 couples + kids+driver) ++Recommend getting your own transport (they have driver lodging facilities as well!) ++Great host with excellent response and spot on advice ++Beautiful traditional/modern Kerala architecture. Huge rooms!! Biggest I've seen in any resort anywhere!

avatar Great Locality and Spacious villa with Serene Sorroundings...

We traveled as a group of 8 with two children in Dec 2014. Stay was very comfortable with spacious rooms each of which have attached bathrooms and air-conditioners. Helper/Cook is available for breakfast included in the package and together with the watchman, they served with a smile. Convenient transport to and from the city is available. Garden and area around the villa are serene and need to be experienced. Area is somewhat secluded so have to be careful to finish all aspects of day tours and any shopping before returning. Also, area experiences power cuts from time to time. Stability of wi-fi connection could be improved. Another aspect to note is that beaches are somewhat far by... Overall, Highly recommended for anyone travelling as a relatively large group and want to be away from the hustle and bustle of urban life!

avatar Calm and peaceful family home

I truly enjoyed my stay at Sharanya, it felt like home away from home. The hosts are very warm and welcoming, it's a perfect destination for a relaxing holiday. The facilities provided are very convenient and hassle free. The rooms are large and the beds are comfortable. The porch is a great way to spend the mornings looking over the garden. I would recommend the place for a peaceful retreat and relaxing holiday.

Your place at Pondy is very nice, well maintained and apt for an weekend break from hectic work schedule. The location is far from city & noise. Your caretakers were great and made good food. We were a big group and all of us had a great time. Thanks for your hospitality.

avatar A beautiful place set in tranquility!

We were a total of 4 families (friends) with small kids. The house was just perfect! It is built with a traditional architecture with all modern amenities. Shiv (owner) was very responsive and the caretakers (Ishwar and a lady) were nice people and made our stay very comfortable. I wish this was closer to Bangalore so that I could visit often :)

Chose this place for a family get together after going through a lot of properties on Trip advisor. When we entered the gate from the main road and drove through the green covered road we had an amazing feeling. Away from the noise and pollution, the place is perfect and fit for our purpose. We loved the garden, it felt good to take a stroll now and then inspite of the weather being too harsh. Morning walk through the garden inside the property and also through the road till the main entrance is something not to be missed. House was built in traditional architecture, well ventilated and the rooms are really big. Kids loved the space to run around. At night, we experienced load/voltage fluctuations and atleast one room air conditioner had to be shut down to ensure the other 3 were running. Except this one, we didn't have encounter any other issues during the stay, Breakfast was very simple south indian fare, it is home made and the taste was good. Coffee and tea were served. Coming to the flip side, it would have been better if the property is directly rented than through trip advisor. Trip advisor charged in USD (shell out more on Forex charges if paid using Indian cards). Settlement for a damage during the stay also takes a lot of time. Overall, would highly recommend the property...

avatar Old world charm with new age comforts

This place was an absolute delight... Spacious, cool and comfortable conveniently located in the heart of Auroville. The house is the typical Indian homes out of the 1950s..with a central open courtyard, antique furniture and beams carved out of solid wood... modernised and upgraded with the today's conveniences (read free wifi, TV, geysers, and a fully equipped kitchen). For a group of over 10 ppl, the place still felt large and was really clean. Would definitely be coming back here..

we had very pleasant and peaceful stay at sharanya, The traditional construction of villa is the really beauty, Spacious terrace is perfect. Garden which surrounds Villa is amazing. It is perfect place to plan family holiday. Breakfast is good, very homely feeling. Kids were all very happy to find space to run around. All over we had great time and lovely memories of our stay at Sharanya.

avatar The villa added great value to our trip to Pondicherry

Pondicherry has Auroville and the Aurobindo Ashram, but for us, my sister, niece and I, the villa Sharanya was a beautiful surprise too. Built in South Indian style with a massive terrace, a quaint pool with goldfish, it also has fabulous green surroundings. You're woken up by the chirping of birds and can enjoy a great cup of tea and watch the sunrise from the terrace. Anyone taking a break from the hustle and bustle of city life will find the place a relaxing getaway. Getting to Auroville or the Aurobindo Ashram is easy too, from here you have to just ask Ishwarji, who looks after the property, to give you numbers of autorickshaw drivers. A bus (the stand is five minutes away) can also be a quick way to get to town. The staff is very friendly and helpful - there are bowls of flowers on tables, freshly picked from the gardens, and if asked nicely Saraswathy can make you a fabulous south Indian breakfast. We're taking back wonderful memories from this trip and would like to come back again.

Space in no Problem there. one might at 1st get confused as the way to the villa is a little inside. but once ur in. Welcome to Peace. the owner Shiv is very Friendly, even if he is not Personally Present there, every think was already taken care of from his side. Shiv"s Father (Uncle) were very welcoming. showed us in and around the house. We went for a garden walk i the morning. all the veggies cooked in the house are grown Out side the Land of the Villa. There are books one can read, Play some games, watch Television, go ride the Cycle, or jst Chill. The Auro Bindo Asharam is near by. While It is a Little away from the Pondi City. breakfast, lunch & dinner, all are available. you jst hav to pre-inform them earlier so they have time to prepare. and also tell them the menu you want to eat. They will do the best possible. The kitchen is free for you to venture, you can cook too. :P All i will say....It just feels like a Home!

Highly recommend this place. Came to visit Adishakti (which was only a stones throw down a very beautiful path. It's in a prime location for seeing this very wonderful arts community outside of Puducherry. The house was peaceful, beautiful, very clean and we had wonderful conversations with staff and owners about the area, the house and just life.

We had a wonderful 3 night stay at Shiv's villa Sharanya and would have stayed longer if we had more time on our hands. We stayed with our two daughters aged nearly 13 and 15. Shiv was an excellent host (on the phone and by email and WhatsApp) throughout our stay and nothing was too much trouble. The villa was large, clean and prettily decorated although not plush. Its setting was magnificent. Transport to and from the villa from the airport and Pondicherry was excellent but it was a little difficult to 'pop out' for anything unless you had booked a taxi or auto rickshaw with notice. We had some wonderful typical breakfasts, lunches and dinners cooked by the welcoming staff. The neighbouring swimming pool was gorgeous (large and picturesque) but you can't be too wild and raucous in the pool as it is set in a tranquil space and bring a swimming cap to wear to comply with regs!

avatar Absolutely the best stay during our trip to South India

12 of us stayed at Sharanya in Jun 2016 and it couldnt be a more wonderful stay. Shiv is the best host, who will give you clear directions to the house and things to do etc, much before you actually arrive. The house is everything terrific and more, clean, bright, traditional and authentic. The caretaker Ishwar and cook Saraswati are wonderful and helped make our stay that much better. Thanks to Shiv and his team who go over and beyond to exceed expectations in this wonderful homestay, close to Auroville.

avatar A beautiful place to stay

Me and ten other students spent 5 weeks in this amazing villa. Sharanya had hot showers, a beautiful garden (with fruit you can eat for free!) and it was always clean. Ishwar and Saraswati (the caretaker and the housekeeper) were always so helpful and kind. They were helping us out with breakfast, filtered water and everything we needed. They were also making us local dishes and teaching us how to make them. The whole group thought it was sad leaving them. Shiv (the owner) was always easy to reach and so helpful. If we had any problems he was helping us out right away. The villa was located in a really peaceful area of Auroville, surrounded by yoga schools and beautiful nature. Sharanya was only a ten minutes walk to the main road where you could take the bus to Pondicherry city for around 30 rupi. We were all really pleased with our stay and we would highly recommend Sharanya!

avatar Incredibly serene!
Rating: (5) rate
Its impossible to walk into the Sharanya compound and not feel completely calm. Perhaps its the hundreds of plants and trees, or the pretty stream, or the creeper-ed gazebo. It was also the warmth of the staff and the sense of space and air in the home. A perfect place to retreat to, or to base yourself while you explore Auroville and nearby Pondicherry. Highly recommend to groups and families.

avatar Fantastic Villa - brilliant stay.
Rating: (5) rate
We stayed at Sharanya for 5 days in August with the entire family of 12. The villa which is built in a traditional style was a charming dwelling. Rooms were large and A/C in the bedrooms was a blessing as the weather was extremely hot! There was plenty of space for the kids to run around without having to worry about noise. Shiv was an excellent host and catered to requests quickly and efficiently. The housekeeper Eshwar is helpful. Some important Facts: 1. the villa is tucked away from the main road. A muddy road past 3 Metal Gates (you are required to open & close every single time to get in/out) Was irritating for us after the first 2 times. 2. there could be multiple powercuts ( an inverter helps keep atleast fans working) 3. the Matrimandir parking is just about 7mins by car 4. the Aurobindo Ashram is a 35 to 45 minutes ride through small village roads subject to cattle/automobile traffic My small suggestions to make guests further comfortable would be to 1. install a/c in the TV room 2. automate the gates to the villa or think of other simpler solutions to keep cattle away 3. larger size single beds on the groundfloor bedroom so two people can comfortably sleep 4. install a washing machine for laundry I would recommend Sharanya happily.

Had a memorable week-long reunion with old friends at this charming, well-equipped facility, and could not have chosen a better place if I tried. Set away from the bustle and traffic, in a quiet setting, surrounded by greenery, this villa, newly created in the old Chettinad style, offers a unique experience in every sense of the term. Not to be missed. Just a 2-minute drive from Auroville and a 15-minute drive from the city.

avatar Best stay in Pondicherry

The villa is a great place to stay when visiting Pondicherry. It is surrounded by lots of trees and flowering plants and it's a peaceful and quiet place to relax . The rooms are very clean and air-conditioned. The caretakers are helpful and make a good breakfast . You can use the kitchen also but will have to get your own groceries, it is very helpful if you want to make a quick snack or Maggi for the children .I was very happy with the stay and will definitely come back again .

avatar Lovely stay at a breathtaking property!
Rating: (5) rate
While I only stayed at the property for a night (and wish I could have stayed for longer), my stay was made very comfortable by Shiv’s gracious hospitality, the easy check in policy and the wonderful breakfast spread laid out by the caretakers. Tucked away from the bustle of Pondicherry, this house is absolutely gorgeous; boasting plenty of natural light, large bedrooms and one of the lushest gardens I have ever come across. Our evening stroll through the property with Kallu by our side was truly unforgettable. The facilities inside the house were easy to access and exactly what we needed; wifi, A/C, Tata Sky, comfortable mattress, the works! I hope to be back soon :)

avatar Peace and tranquility

We visited on occasion of a couple of milestone birthdays in the family. Our group was a family of 10 with 7 adults and 3 kids. Overall it was a fantastic experience and one which we wouldn’t mind repeating again! Thanks to Shiv for his wonderful hospitality! To start with, this is NOT your typical resort or hotel and as such, there is no room service, concierge, housekeeping, restaurants etc. If you have any such expectations, look elsewhere. However, if you are looking for a home stay where you can have a relaxing experience, get lots of peace and tranquility and traditional regional cuisine, read on. The property - As advertised - large, stand alone house, well maintained with a small but lovely indoor fish pond. 4 traditional bedrooms with comfortable beds and attached shower rooms (Additional, convenient, standalone hand wash/ toilet on the ground floor). Shower Rooms are stocked with basic but functional, towels, soap and shampoo. Extra beds and blankets are plentiful and made available. All bedrooms have a split AC with a couple of ceiling fans and have plenty of airflow and ventilation. A big well tended garden with a riot of butterflies and birds that is a joy in of itself. A portico in front where you can relax. TV room with adequate English and regional channels. Note: entry to property is clearly marked on Google maps and the signage is good but it isn’t that obvious to the naked eye. You need to slow down else you will miss it. Refreshments - Again, not to be compared with a resort or hotel. There is a cook who is reasonably competent in regional cuisine who can, for a charge, cook breakfast, lunch and dinner plus the coffee and tea. We found the food to be delicious and to our liking - we are South Indians. There is a caretaker - Eashwar - available on call in his own separate accommodations outside the main house but inside the compound. Very helpful and friendly. Sights - Auroville, which is a couple of kilometres away is the most accessible. Pondicherry is further away and pretty much all that is there to see is available as a list elsewhere. Please note that this is Tamil Nadu and NOT Pondicherry. So any alcohol bought in Pondy and bringing it to the homestay will likely be deemed illegal and confiscated at the check post. Also note that there is a theatre research centre ‘Adi Sakthi’ next door and on quiet days you are likely to be startled by unconventional sounds and music. To us, it added it’s own charm and was never a bother. Overall, it was a memorable stay and you are someone who is in search of a serene, peaceful and invigorating experience with the sights and sounds of butterflies, birds and wind chimes, this is your perfect getaway!
