Smugglers Nest

Smugglers Nest is a very secluded villa perched on the hillside above Smugglers Cove Beach, one of the best snorkeling beaches on St. Lucia. It offers unparalleled views of the ocean and the coastline from all of its rooms. Recently featured in Architectural Digest, it is situated in a lush tropical garden with a variety of palms, flowers, plants and trees and offers one of the most romantic spots on the entire island of St. Lucia. Smugglers Nest combines all the essential elements of a dream home in the Caribbean, from its stunning architecture and finishes to its wonderful location and its beautiful tropical landscaped gardens with a network of footpaths that allow for leisurely strolls. The villa is designed as an open plan. Smugglers Nest is imaginatively furnished with antique Indonesian furniture and artifacts set against a dazzling white background providing a stunning and dramatic blend of both the old and the sophisticated. The home has two living areas, one of lounging and another as a TV room. An open plan dining room is adjacent to a well-appointed kitchen and a series of open patios. The master bedroom has a king sized bamboo four poster bed with mosquito netting and en-suite bath as well as several small patios providing 180 degree views of the ocean. A second bedroom has an interesting gallery with the bedroom on the lower level, opening on to its large private patio. This room has a double bed and a large en-suite bathroom. A cozy study completes the villa. Outside, a large crystal clear private swimming pool is nestled below the villa and provides views out toward the ocean. Guests will particularly enjoy sunset cocktails on the lower deck that provides marvelous views of Pigeon Island against the striking Caribbean sunset. A championship 18 hole golf course is just minutes away by car. Maid at the villa can cook breakfast and lunch. She can cook dinner also but must leave it in the fridge as she leaves at 3:00. Please note that due to the Cliffside location, children under the age of 16 are not accepted at this villa.</p>

This villa was amazing. We visited with another couple and had such a blast. The location cannot be matched.

Already for the nineth time we stayed for two weeks in Smugglers Cove. How special it is time after time. To start with the beauty of the house and the gardens. The house on the cliff is build mostly open with a magnificent view of the turqoise ocean. The rooms decorated with taste, white with wooden furniture from oriental countries. The Masterbedroom has windows all around you, the nice breeze comes in all the time and the sound of the ocean makes you sleep like a baby. The second bedroom is special too with a lovely own terras overlooking the ocean. There are terasses all over the property for moments of shade or sun. The deck near the naturally shaped swimmingpool askes for moments of silence, meditation, reflecting on life or just looking at the sundown with a glass of champagne in your hand. The early morning I sit there, birdwatching, magnificent, the hummingbirds around me, time for thinking, reading and writing. What an inspiring place! The crew is great, sitently they go there way, taking care with a natural feeling and care for us and the property. The gardens surrounding the house and the cliff have palmtrees, big plants, flowers and there are many birds to see. Don't be surprised if you sit near the pool that a couple little blue herrons come and drink from the pool. Olga's cooking is on demand, delicious, her chickencurry and fishcookies are the greatest in the world and we travel a lot. She washes and irons our clothes, takes care of the beds and house. Every morning Ton and Trevor clean the terrasses, the pool and take care of the hough gardens. Swimming in the pool means also one can overlook the ocean. The eveningswims under the stars are romantic. Every morning we go to Smugglers Cove, just next to the house, a staircase from the cliff, a lovely hidden away, small beach. It has a nice beachbar for drinks and bites of Cap Maison Hotel, nextdoor neighbours. It adds something to the small beach if you want to stay longer than just swimming. The fishes and coral, what a beauty, every morming is a suprise. The very challenging golfcourse is only five minutes drive away, they pick you up if neccecairy, so we played at least 4 times a week. Even after nine years it is a challenging and well maintained course. Critics? Well we heard there will be a new freezer and fridge next time. Everything worked well but those were a bit touched by the ocean air. But who cares, if your eyes and heart are open you truly can appreciate this wonderful property.

This was once a beautiful property and with some care, maintenance and updating could be so again. My husband and I travel to the caribbean 2 times a year so we have a lot of vacation homes to compare this one to. If your expectations are low, you will be happy here. If you like comforts and cleanliness, this is not the place for you. Pros: The location is lovely, up on the cliff with a small beach just steps away. The home has a wonderful tree house feeling to it. Large gardens to explore and plenty of privacy. The guard keeps the property secure but kept out of our way. He and the housekeeper were both very nice. Toby and PawPaw, the dogs are both sweethearts and we really enjoyed their company. Cons: The home, at one time a showpiece, is now "resting on it's laurels" and sorely needs improvement. The refrigerator didn't work properly, so our food was spoiled. It left a pool of water in the floor every morning. The freezer door wouldn't stay shut, our ice melted. The outdoor shower did not work. There was no washer/dryer. The housekeep could wash something for you in the security guard's house and hang it out to dry. There was no grill or BBQ. There was mold and mildew everywhere in the kitchen, on the counters, on the cabinets and grim around cabinets. There were holes in the cabinet doors. There was a shattered makeup mirror in the bathroom. Mirrors were caked with mildew, there were spider webs on books and shelves. The landscape has grown up so much around the house that the views are extremely limited. The lower gazebo has no view at all. The overgrown shrubs also kept the house from getting any breeze. With no air conditioners, you never felt like you could get any relief from the heat. We asked for a fan that worked properly (and got one promptly) and that helped. I would recommend ceiling fans in every room. Some rooms did not have them though it looked as though there may have been there at one time. The house is open, but not airy. It's stifling hot with no breeze. The only breeze is from the deck. We put the fans from our bedrooms by the dining table to eat at night. The faucet in the lower bedroom sprayed water onto the counter. We had to get a plumber out to fix it and couldn't use that bathroom for awhile. Lastly, some of the accessories are mildewed and need to be replaced, such as the nasty zebra skin rug in one room is practically rotten.
