Although we didn't actually spend a night at Skindles, we were given an extensive guided tour by the owners.
The building has been lovingly and diligently restored to its historical glory by Peter and Chantal the owners. The property has a large garden and has 5 (I think) self contained suites, each over two floors as well as some communal areas on the ground floor such as the dining room and the 'smoking room'.
Located just a few doors down from 'Toc H' and less than 200 metres from the Grote Markt, Skindles would make an ideal base for anyone wanting somewhere 'classy' to stay close to the town amenities while also being convenient for the WW1 sites such as the cemetery at Lijsenthoek.

Great place to stay with very friendly and helpful hosts Peter and Chantal. Comfortable beds, delicious breakfasts, wonderful barbecue party outside as weather was perfect. Huge garden for children to run about and play. Easy free parking off the road. Historically interesting building and lots of space inside for a talk from guides. We were a family party of 41 ranging from 10 months to over 80 years and everyone was very happy. Well done, keep up the good work and good luck.

We have just returned from three nights at Skindles in Poperinge. The hotel can accommodate up to 24 guests across six suites of rooms. The Hotel was used as Officers quarters during the Great War; and the splendid suites and (most especially) the communal rooms sensitively honour and respect this proud heritage while offering beautiful and tasteful, comfortable and well equipped accommodation. Chantal and Peter are convivial, knowledgeable, model hosts and made our family feel thoroughly welcomed. We enjoyed exploring Poperinge and were well placed for Ypres (Ieper) for the Menin Gate and the 'In Flanders Fields' museum and the battlefields. We also visited Bethune in France to tread in the footsteps of a family forebear who was there in 1918 before travelling on to Cambrai. The building dates from the 18th century and carries its age well (although with steps and staircases consistent with such longevity). I cannot commend this venue or the owners highly enough. Bravo.

Ideale locatie om de streek rond Ieper en Poperinge te ontdekken.
Zeer ruime kamers en ruime eethoek. Gezellige bar
Enkel de zithoek misten we een beetje

The history of Skindles during The Great War is easily researched on Google so I won't bother to elaborate here, but having visited the property for my work with Britain At War Magazine I can confirm that it is a wonderful time capsule thatr can be enjoyed without undergoing any of the hardships that the visitors some 100 years ago underwent.
Conveniently placed for visiting the sites and museums of the Ypres Salient, highly accessible, with its own parking.
Normally bed and breakfast only, although Chantal, the co-owner demonstrated she can cook a brilliant evening meal for a group if persuaded. Breakfast was delightful with a choice of filter of espresso coffees. Important for some of us whose day doesn't get started until the third cup.
Lovely place that I am fortunate to have visited.

Stayed as part of a group in November 2016. The house has been freshly renovated and is very comfortable with large rooms and modern bathroom facilities. There is parking too which is always appreciated.
The owners, Peter and Chantal, clearly love the property and the history of it which goes back several centuries, and this is reflected in the sympathetic way in which they have renovated it. Many of the rooms are suites with a sitting area; some have a mezzanine with a second bedroom.
So all in all a really nice place; add to this the fantastic welcome and attentive service and you will not regret staying in Skindles.

We were 3 generations with at least one person per decade since 1930 but there was something for everyone in Poperinge and the surrounding area. The local swimming pool and the brewery were favorites. The house is fantastic, everyone had a fabulous time, eating, talking and relaxing; it felt like a real home. We wish we could have stayed longer. Thank you Chantel

Chantelle and Peter were wonderful hosts and Skindles provided the perfect ambience for our family reunion retracing the footsteps of our Grandfather's service in WW1. Thank-you for a wonderful stay!

Chantal and Peter run a lovely apartment "hotel" which is perfectly located for exploring the WW1 history of the region. We were here with a group of 15 family multigenerational members for a reunion to honour and retrace great/grandfather's WW1 history.
What could have been a rather trying experience given the different ages, arrival dates , requests for 2 private catered meals and many other queries were handled with warmth and flexibility by Chantal and Pater.
The accommodation is well appointed, clean and comfortable - the main living room with a piano ( Peter organised a pianist for one of the evenings which was a real treat!) and the bedroom accomadation were lovely . Note there are stairs and I would, not recommend for very young kids or older folk although my 80+ fit MIL was fine.
The property is located on the middle of the town of Poperinge which has all basic amenities , cafes bakeries etc and is about a 15 min drive from Ypres.
Could not recommend it highly enough for large group accomadation in this lovingly restored historic property.

Skindles was the perfect choice for a family reunion to mark our grandfather's WW1 service at Ypres and Paessendaele. This was the old officers' club behind the lines and has retained the old salon and bar while upstairs has been converted to a number of apartments - allowing both gathering and private spaces for 3 generations of extended family. Chantal and Peter were perfect hosts: they arranged transport, catering and even a pianist for a party.

We could not have found a more amazing venue for our family trip to Belguim this summer. Our group of 15 ranged in age from 12 to 84, and Skindles provided the perfect base with 5 beautiful 2 bedroom apartments, a bunkroom and amazing community spaces for everyone to enjoy. Peter and Chantal could not have been more gracious or accommodating. They have restored this 300 year old home to immaculate modern standards whilst retaining it's delightful character and historical charm. We enjoyed several superb catered meals, a beautiful outdoor reception and a party complete with piano music and dancing in the parlor.....all of which were kindly coordinated by our wonderful hosts. In addition we played a friendly family game of backyard soccer, rode bikes along the many local trails, and enjoyed all the quaint town of Poperinge had to offer by foot. If you have a group and are looking for a truly one-of-a-kind experience you have found it!

The Canadian, Scottish and English members of my family, twenty of us making up three generations, met up for five days in August to honour the sacrifice of my Great Uncle Tom, at Passchendaele. Skindles was perfect. Like a home from home with great bedroom accommodation, dining room, bar room, lounge and large kitchen. We spent all the evenings outdoors in the back garden sitting round a fire until late, and we barbecued one evening.
Peter and Chantal were truly marvellous hosts. Friendly and very helpful. Chantal helped each morning with the terrific breakfasts.
Skindles is perfectly situated in Poperinge to visit the great WW1 Memorials. One evening we chartered a bus to take us to the evening ceremony at the Menin Gate in Ypres. We also visited Tyne Cot, Vimy Ridge and many other Memorials.
Another evening we booked a room in an excellent restaurant, just walking distance away, for the whole family to enjoy our last night together.
Chantal had numerous excellent suggestions for activities including hiring a pianist for an evening.
The local swimming pool was excellent for the children.
This was a truly memorable visit and we would love to go back to Skindles.

Chantelle and Peter could not have been more accommodating for our stay. A group of 23 on a battlefield study. Ideally located within the historic town of Poperinge. The accommodation has been recently upgraded and the rooms are of a high quality. The historic former officer's-mess is great value for money.

Skindles is a great place to stay for a WW1 battlefield tour, not least as it was an officers club in WW1. The facilities are good, the rooms comfortable and the owners very helpful.

Amazing property and grounds, with an interesting and significant history. Very friendly and helpful owners who made sure that we were warmly welcomed and settled upon our arrival. The house is excellent for large groups, including stag and hen parties. There is plenty of room to spread out, and the large BBQ and fire pit were very welcome. There is lots of space outside in the garden and you are not overlooked. You are also not far from many of the local attractions, whilst there are shops close by within easy walking distance. There is also more than sufficient parking. Our group of 13 had a great stay and were sad to leave. Many thanks to Chantal for making our stay very enjoyable. Top marks.

We had college students and faculty who stayed here for three nights as part of a WWI tour of France and Belgium. Not only was the location wonderful to visit sites in and around Ypres, but also it was an easy drive further to Ghent and/or Bruges. We used every room and loved each of them, plus we made regular use of the barbecue and fire pit out back. The staff was fantastic and provided an incredible breakfast spread every day, answered all of our questions, and generally made us feel welcome. Excellent experience!
